The Power of “we” – Is the UK Switched on to Collective Switching?

The concept was simple; by buying our energy as a collective, we can negotiate a fairer deal, saving UK households millions of pounds. And the public bought it, well at least hundreds of thousands did. But the initial excitement has now died down, with Labour’s recently launched Switch Together scheme garnering little if any attention in the media.

Has collective switching failed in the UK? Or has the public’s imagination, once captured, now ebbed away? Can the collective power of 000s of people change the dynamics in the energy industry? We think so – that’s why we formed thePeoplesPower

Earlier this week the Department for Energy and Climate Change (DECC) published the results of a survey of over 2000 people into energy and climate change. DECC plan to do 4 of these surveys a year to gauge whether their activities are aligned with public concerns.

Ofgem guidance on collective purchasing and switching schemes

Ofgem wrote an open letter offering guidance on the legality of collective switching schemes. In general Ofgem “generally welcome” the development of collective purchasing schemes. In particular, schemes which place an emphasis on involving vulnerable or currently non engaged customers were singled out as being particularly welcome. This is good for thePeoplesPower as we place a special emphasis on trying to help people at risk of or suffering from fuel poverty
