Last year Mike got massive energy bills. So did his sister, and so did his kids, so did his mates (in fact, so did everyone). They all read countless articles about the rising profits of energy companies, and about the millions of people who struggle with fuel poverty every year.
They also came across one article which hit upon a solution – bringing people together to bargain down their energy bills. Going Dutch: Local Government and Fuel Poverty (opens in a new window)
Even better, this solution had already been tried and tested. In one example we found a dutch website (Met de Stroom Mee) allowed people to sign up for cheaper energy through group bargaining power, saving 6,687 users about €300 each.
So Mike, with help from friends and family, set up thePeoplesPower, harnessing the power of the internet to help British households come together to get the cheapest electricity, cheapest gas, and the cheapest green energy as well.
When we switch electricity or switch gas together we will get the cheapest energy bills.
thePeoplesPower – a Community Interest Company
We run as a social enterprise, as such we are registered as a a Community Interest Company (CIC):
- We are reliant on “people power” – we can’t compete with the large energy companies or switching sites as they have far larger advertising budgets – we need all the people who sign up to spread the word to their friends, colleagues and family. Spread the word on how to get the cheapest electricity and gas.
- We are committed to working for community benefits
- We will spend any surpluses we might generate to not-for-profit energy saving or renewable energy schemes
- As a social enterprise we will involve anyone who takes one of our offers in helping us decide how we should spend any surpluses
